Hearts and Minds

World-class health, safety and environment (HSE) performance involves more than mechanically applying a management system – it requires the involvement of everyone in the organisation, from top to bottom.  It involves utilising knowledge at all levels, and fully integrating HSE within everyday behaviour.

Winning Hearts and Minds is about getting everyone to work safely, not because they’ve been told to, but because that is the way they want to work and that is the way they know how to work.  Hearts and Minds is about improving the culture of safety in an organisation, making safety a fully integrated part of working behaviour, and in the process easier to manage.

What is Hearts and Minds?

Hearts and Minds is a toolkit intended to help organisations to improve their HSE performance by:

1. Leading the way – the ‘route to the top’ of the HSE culture ladder
2. Providing the process and tools to get everyone involved and to facilitate behavioural change –the necessary components of a solution

The Hearts and Minds Toolkit enables you to create a truly proactive and generative approach to HSE management.  Learn more by freely downloading the Winning Hearts and Minds Roadmap, or purchase a hard copy here.

World class HSE performance...

The Hearts and Minds safety toolkit was developed by Shell E&P, based upon 20 years of university research, and is being successfully applied in both Shell and non-Shell companies around the world. Hearts and Minds uses a range of tools and techniques to help the organisation involve all staff in managing HSE as an integral part of their business.  Collectively, these tools and techniques are known as the Hearts and Minds Toolkit.

This state of the art toolkit is available to those outside the Shell Group, thanks to a publishing agreement between the Energy Institute and Shell E&P.  The Hearts and Minds Toolkit has tools suitable for managers, team leaders and workforce at all levels, that are designed to work alongside any existing HSE tools your organisation may already use.  In addition, the EI provides support on the toolkit, as well as a wide range of free web resources.

A brief summary of the individual tools in the Hearts and Minds programme is listed in ‘the tools’ section. A full description, plus slide presentations and animations designed to assist delivery in workshops, are given in the ‘Toolkit’ tab.

Profits generated by the sale of the Hearts and Minds toolkit are used to update and extend it by funding research and development, aimed at helping companies improve their HSE performance. For further information about current research activities, visit the Hearts and Minds website.
